Tell us a bit about your background

I studied Geography, Anthropology and Sociology at Durham University and then travelled for 18 months before moving to London.  I started my career in recruitment and moved into a HR business partner role when I worked at EY. After taking a career break for some more travel, I worked in HR at ASOS where I also studied a Masters Degree in Human Resource Management before joining Mizuho's investment banking business in London, in 2013. I've tried to work in different sectors to gain a wider perspective on how HR can work within these sectors.

What do you do at Mizuho?

I work within the HR Department and look after Talent Development and Inclusion for the investment banking business.

In a short paragraph could you explain Talent Development and what it involves?

My role looks at the Learning and Development opportunities we offer and how we best develop our talent pipelines for the future. My job also includes looking at the Inclusion and Diversity agenda for the business. We are still at the start of our Inclusion journey but as a small organisation (in London) I think we should be proud of how far we've come in such a short time.

What trends do you foresee for the future of L&D or Inclusion?

I think the workplace of the future will need to be more flexible to meet employee and customer needs. In order for businesses to stay relevant they'll need to make sure their employees are properly skilled to deal with the changing nature of work and evolution of roles. There's a massive opportunity cost to not upskilling employees to deal with the changing nature of work.

What has been one of your most proudest moments during your career?

I've been really proud of how far we've come on our Inclusion journey in such a short time. The founding of the Inclusion Network has been really powerful and we've achieved a lot so far. Studying a part time Masters whilst working full time was definitely one of my most challenging experiences. I was really proud to achieve a distinction in my Masters.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Travel is definitely a passion. I've been lucky enough to travel to over 65 countries and prefer backpacking to five star luxury! Since becoming a parent, I fear that destinations might be limited to short haul distances for a few years.
