Initiatives for creating framework

Promoting the Mizuho Eco–Cycle initiative

We promote the Mizuho Eco–Cycle initiative by providing a series of environment–related financial products and services that support customers' initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions, including J–Credit Scheme*, a Japanese system of emissions trading.

The Mizuho Eco–Cycle scheme refers to a series of environmental businesses that build a bridge among small, medium and large corporations and even individual customers. Through engagement in these efforts, Mizuho will expand the "Eco–Cycle" to reduce CO2 emissions throughout society.

*   The J–Credit Scheme is a system by which the government certifies as credits reductions in the amount of CO2 and other greenhouse gases emitted or absorbed as a result of such initiatives as the installation of energy–saving equipment or forest management. The credits can be used in a variety of ways, including to achieve targets for low–carbon society realization plans and for carbon offsets.

Supporting environmental management

To support initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions by Japanese companies using "J–Credit Scheme," Mizuho provides diverse products and services, such as environment–friendly loans, environmental business matching services, and support for J–Credit Scheme usage.

Providing a way to help the environment through the use of personal loans and other means

Mizuho purchases credits from J–Credit Scheme in a way that reflects the usage of environmentally friendly products and services by individual customers, and offsets their CO2 emissions.

Participation in the Environmental Information Database Project of the Ministry of the Environment (Government of Japan)

In view of the growing emphasis on environment–related information for investment decisions, the Ministry of the Environment (MOE) aims to develop an Environmental Information Disclosure System that will enable financial institutions to access, analyze, and process environmental information related to their investee companies in a timely fashion and efficiently. To this end, beginning in fiscal 2013, the MOE began to implement its Environmental Information Database Project. Mizuho Research & Technologies is participating in the project and is acting as one member of the Secretariat. In addition, Asset Management One is participating in the project from its perspective as an institutional investor and has joined in discussions regarding environmental information necessary for investment and related disclosure systems.
