– Forging the Future of Decarbonisation: Celebrating 50 Years of the Japan-Australia Basic Treaty of Friendship and Co-operation –
On 2 June, the Sydney Office hosted an exclusive seminar in Perth, Western Australia, bringing together industry leaders from across the energy value chain to discuss energy resilience and the need to accelerate investment in decarbonisation projects.
The seminar, JP–AU Resilient Energy Futures – Navigating Pathways to Net Zero, took place amid ongoing global energy security challenges and geopolitical uncertainty, which are placing increasing pressure on decarbonisation efforts.
The event also aligned with the 50th anniversary of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Co-operation between Japan and Australia, signed on 16 June 1976, which has helped underpin decades of investment and trade between the two countries.
The Sydney Office has continued to provide thought leadership and convene dialogue to support the transition to a decarbonised society, including through initiatives covering CCUS and hydrogen. Building on Mizuho's long-standing focus on the resources and energy sector, we will leverage the expertise and networks developed in this field to help advance the practical implementation of the energy transition. Hosting this event in Perth was a strategic step to further deepen engagement in Western Australia. The event was co-hosted with the Japanese Association of Western Australia, with support from Pollination and the Government of Western Australia's Department of Energy and Economic Diversification (DEED). This framework enabled broad and deep dialogue with stakeholders across both the local public and private sectors, reinforcing Mizuho's presence as a central hub for decarbonisation networks in Western Australia.
The programme was designed to span the full spectrum from policy to implementation and finance. It featured insights on Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) market developments, electricity demand and emissions management for data centres, and financing and bankability considerations for CCS (carbon capture and storage) projects. The seminar also brought together perspectives from energy producers, offtakers, technology providers and cross-border CCS developers, including discussion on commercial pathways to scaling CCS.
The event reflects Mizuho's ongoing commitment to demonstrate leadership as a financial institution in supporting a decarbonised society across Australia, strengthening the Japan–Australia strategic partnership and enabling the practical implementation of related projects.
