Step into a typical day with Pauline Blyum, an intern in the Information Technology team at Mizuho EMEA. From supporting her team on cybersecurity projects to networking with fellow interns, we take a glimpse into the challenges, learning opportunities, and moments of connection that shaped her journey at Mizuho.
My morning routine is...
I wake up around 7:00 AM, usually after hitting snooze once or twice. I take my time getting ready to enjoy a bit of peace before the busy day ahead. On days when I don’t snooze my alarm, I like to walk to the office – it’s an hour away and a nice way to start the day. Otherwise, I’m packed in on the Central line.
The first thing I do when I get into the office...
I get in around 08:45 and start by checking my calendar and emails to plan out my priorities for the day. I also catch up with my buddy, she’s been incredibly helpful since I started and always makes time to support me.
My role involves...
As a cybersecurity intern, I support the team with research and project work. I’ve had the chance to contribute to a range of different projects, and that variety has made the experience really engaging. These projects have helped me strengthen my technical skills and gain a deeper understanding of threat intelligence and its practical applications.

The thing I am enjoying most about my internship...
The people. Everyone is approachable and generous with their time and expertise. I’ve integrated well within my team and have also had the chance to connect with other IT teams, which has broadened my perspective.
The hardest part of my internship...
Has been learning how to take in a vast amount of information so quickly, my notes got messy very fast. I’ve learned to ask questions when I don’t understand something, and to keep my notes organised enough that I can actually make sense of them later.
A memorable moment during my time here is…
Presenting our ESG project to senior stakeholders and receiving positive feedback. Our group placed second and received vouchers, which was a great bonus to an already fulfilling experience.
At university I'm studying...
Neuroscience at UCL. While it’s not a conventional path into cybersecurity, through self-learning and this internship I’ve gained valuable insight and hands-on experience in the field.
I chose Mizuho because...
I saw Mizuho as an already prominent bank, but one that was also a growing entity and wanted to be part of that journey. That environment of growth has been reflected in the internship as my team is working on some exciting initiatives.

In 10 years' time I'd like to be...
I’d like to be in a role where I can help shape a positive team culture and share what I’ve learned with others. At the same time, I want to stay hands-on with the technical side by solving complex problems and staying close to the details that first drew me to cybersecurity.
Looking back at the internship…
Looking back, this internship has helped shape my career goals in several ways. I’ve discovered that I really enjoy being in a technical role, especially when it involves problem-solving and learning about cybersecurity. At the same time, working in a financial environment like Mizuho has deepened my interest in finance and shown me how the two areas intersect in meaningful ways. What’s stood out most, though, is how much I value being part of a kind and collaborative team, and it’s something I’ll definitely prioritise in the future.
One piece of advice to future interns...
I would definitely advise to be curious and proactive. It’s important to take responsibility for your own development by asking questions and seeking out feedback. Some of the most interesting work I’ve been involved in came from simply expressing interest and asking to be included.
