China's 'New Economy' Opportunity

Reaching for the world

From high-speed railways and robotics to mobile payments and e-commerce, China is targeting a new path to economic growth focused on innovation, technology and consumption. China continues to invest enormous resources to push new boundaries with the 'One-Belt-One-Road' initiative and 'Made in China 2025' agenda, transforming global industries and importantly expanding China's power in the world, including the Nordic region.

Our Nordic team is proud to have hosted its first China Economics conference, co-presented with the Financial Times. We brought together some of the Nordic's leading corporates for a discussion on China and its growing importance in the Nordic region. China now represents c.30% of global GDP and in 2018 is expected to over take the US as the largest domestic market in the world, worth over USD6,000bn.

With presentations from Mizuho's Chief China Economist J G Shen, and the Financial Times Nordic Correspondent, Richard Milne, delegates were greeted with topics ranging from inbound M&A by Chinese businesses to the changing focus within China from an 'any-growth' to a 'quality-growth' orientated economy and new focus on technology s‎ectors.

"This event was highly valued by our clients, who see increasing growth opportunities in ‎China as well as increasing investments by Chinese companies in the Nordic region, such as Geely's multi billion investment in Volvo. The insights shared by J G Shen provided food for thought for our clients and is an example of how we can position ourselves as a trusted advisor to our clients investing into Asia"

Rikard af Ekenstam, Mizuho Bank, Head of Nordic Region

The Q&A session touched on topical events, such as the macro and political spheres; the potential global impact of a US/China trade war; RMB liberalisation; and US and China's growing rivalry as leaders in R&D, robotics and innovation in the world.

We would like to thank all of our delegates for attending the seminar, and we look forward to seeing you continuing to prosper in this exciting and growing market.
