MIZUHO Sustainability Action

Registration as a TNFD Adopter

Mizuho Financial Group, Inc. (President & CEO: Masahiro Kihara) has registered as an adopter of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD)1Recommendations (TNFD Adopter)2, which were published in September 2023 by the TNFD.

Mizuho has been supporting client initiatives to increase positive impact and reduce negative impact on natural capital from both financial and non-financial perspectives. We support the TNFD’s objective of supporting a shift in global financial flows toward nature-positive outcomes, and decided to join the TNFD Forum in March 2022.
In FY2022, we conducted an initial analysis of Mizuho's loan portfolio to identify key natural capital and relevant sectors, and subsequently disclosed the results3 of the analysis.

Mizuho is committed to strengthen both financial and non-financial solutions for our clients' initiatives to realize nature–positive outcomes, make gradual improvements based on the TNFD Recommendations, and disclose our progress.
We recognize that natural capital is the foundation of all economic activities and an important subject closely related to climate change, and based on this recognition we will contribute to the creation of a sustainable society by proactively implementing related initiatives.

  1. An international initiative aimed at developing and delivering a risk management and opportunity framework for disclosing nature-related financial information. The TNFD officially launched in June 2021 after a nine-month preparatory phase by an Informal Working Group comprising of 74 members across business, finance, and consortia. The initiative to bring together the TNFD was led by four Founding Partner organizations: the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Global Canopy, and the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF).
  2. An organization that has registered on the TNFD website that intends to start making disclosures aligned with the TNFD Recommendations in their corporate reporting. Organizations that registered as early adopters are required to publish TNFD-aligned disclosures based on financial year 2024 or 2025 outcomes. Organizations registered as TNFD Adopters by January 10, 2024 will be announced as TNFD Early Adopters at the Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum at Davos in January 2024.
