Mizuho Americas wins four 2022 PFI Awards

February 27, 2023

New York, February 27, 2023 – Mizuho Americas today announced it received 2022 Project Finance International (PFI) Deal of the Year Awards for its role on four major infrastructure transactions. The awards were presented at a ceremony in London. Award winners were selected among detailed award entries and final evaluations by the PFI senior editorial team.

Mizuho was recognized in the following categories:

Americas Power Deal of the Year for Mizuho’s role as Initial Underwriter and Coordinating Lead Arranger on Blackstone’s $6 billion financing of the Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) project. CHPE is a 339-mile, fully-buried transmission line that will deliver 1,250 megawatts of clean and renewable hydropower from Québec to New York City. A marquee project for the State of New York, CHPE is the largest transmission project to be constructed in the state in the last 50 years and is expected to decrease carbon emissions by ~3.9 million metric tons per year and reduce harmful local air pollutants by ~20% – equivalent to removing 44% of New York City’s passenger vehicles.

Americas P3 Deal of the Year for Mizuho’s role as Joint Lead Arranger on the $6.6 billion financing to re-develop Terminal 1 at John F. Kennedy International Airport. The new Terminal 1, a 23-gate, state-of-the-art terminal, will serve as a global gateway to the New York metro area. This transaction represents an important milestone for Mizuho, as it is the first airport financing, as well as the first transportation asset with traffic risk, ever booked in the Americas region.

Americas Oil & Gas Deal of the Year for Mizuho’s role as Coordinating Lead Arranger and Syndication Agent on the $13.2 billion project financing for the initial phase of Venture Global’s Plaquemines LNG facility. This transaction represents the largest project financing of 2022.

Americas Industrial Deal of the Year for Mizuho’s role as Initial Underwriter and Joint Bookrunner on the $14.3 billion financing of Brookfield’s 49% investment in Intel Corp’s $30 billion, leading-edge semiconductor fab. The brownfield semiconductor production facility is being developed alongside four operating fabs at Intel’s Ocotillo Campus, which with the expansion, will become the company’s largest mega-factory network worldwide.

“Integrating Project Finance across major industry verticals such as Power, Energy, Transportation and Industrials is a unique differentiator and has allowed us to serve our clients holistically,” said Paul McNutt, Head of Power, Energy and Infrastructure, Americas.

“Project finance is a strategic area in the Americas and across the globe,” said Rahul D. Shah, Mizuho Americas Head of Project Finance. “We are proud to be recognized and to play a role in these leading, even historic deals.”
