Mizuho endorses op-ed on blue economy
by the Oceanographic Institute of Monaco

Mizuho Financial Group, Inc. (President & CEO: Masahiro Kihara) has endorsed an op-ed on the blue economy by the Oceanographic Institute of Monaco and other key stakeholders, at the Blue Economy & Finance Forum. This marks the first time that a Japanese financial institution has endorsed such a statement, which asserts the aim to achieve sustainable marine environment conservation.

The endorsed op-ed was published on June 16, 2025 and calls for promoting sustainable and healthy marine environments by advocating the responsible use and preservation of ocean resources.

Given that oceans cover three quarters of the Earth’s surface, contain 97 percent of the planet’s water, and represent 99 percent of the living space on the planet by volume, they play a vital role in the Earth’s ecosystems. Oceans also provide important natural resources such as food and are integral to economic activity. However, oceans face significant challenges, including declining fish stocks, rising sea temperatures, acidification, and widespread pollution.

Moreover, addressing key environmental issues such as climate change and promoting resource circulation (a circular economy), natural capital, and biodiversity requires comprehensive actions that incorporate both individual efforts and consideration of interconnected dynamics (synergy and trade-offs). The blue economy, which includes marine efforts, intersects these environmental challenges. Through engagement with the blue economy, Mizuho seeks to actively drive the transition to a sustainable society while overcoming interconnected environmental issues.

By endorsing this op-ed on the blue economy, Mizuho is declaring its commitment to the realization of sustainability under its corporate purpose of “Proactively innovate together with our clients for a prosperous and sustainable future”. As a stakeholder responsible for maintaining marine health, Mizuho aims to collaborate with various partners in co-creating solutions for sustainability.
